Rutendo Karikoga, a career student, just completed her first level of the Accessory Design Career Program at Florence University of the Arts. She already has her own brand of leather goods in Zimbabue called Famba Neni. Rutendo was here to gain manufacturing and collection building skills in order to refine her own accessory design projects.

FLY, the creative learning lab of the students of Fashion and Accessories Studies and Technology at Florence University of the Art, featured Rutendo’s handbag collection from her first semester as a student. The handbags were inspired by various birds which Rutendo sees as freedom fighters. The color palette for the bags was derived from the architecture which she saw during her trip to Naples this fall. The pieces were manufactured using local leather and feathers provided by Mazzanti piume here in Florence.

The cross body bags Rutendo designed are made in the simple shape of a bucket or hobo bag while the funny pack has a peculiar egg shape. The designs are also strongly influenced by Rutendo's experience in the Retail Management Experiential Learning class. By managing FLY and working with the public she now has a completely different perspective on merchandising details which make a bag, even the simplest bag, a sellable one.
